Know Your Constitution
According to Ayurveda, each of us is born with a unique constitutional code, which is a certain combination of Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha called prakruti. Each person’s combination of Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha is different in quantity and quality. Just as any two finger prints aren’t the same, likewise any two prakruti are not the same. An individual’s prakruti is determined by the parents’ prakruti, their physical and emotional states, and the circumstances at the time of conception.
A person’s constitution is his or her unique psycho-physiological formation and functional habits. Some may be born with one dosha being dominant, others may have two doshas that are predominant; and some may have an equal balance of all the three doshas (tridoshic). There are three mono-types, three dual-types, and one tripletype constitution.
Mono Types:
Vata – predominance of Vata dosha in constitution
Pitta – predominance of Pitta dosha in constitution
Kapha – predominance of Kapha dosha in constitution
Dual Types:
Vata–Pitta – predominance of Vata and Pitta dosha in the constitution
Pitta–Kapha – predominance of Pitta and Kapha dosha in the constitution
Kapha–Vata – predominance of Kapha and Vata dosha in the constitution
Triple Type:
Vata–Pitta–Kapha – balanced combination of Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas
The chart below will give you your prakruti. While reading the chart, carefully consider what is most consistent in your lifestyle over a long period of time. Do not consider recent changes.
To determine your prakruti, add up all the checked boxes in each column. The total in each column is your proportion for that dosha. For example, if your columns total Vata dosha = 10, Pitta dosha = 14 and Kapha dosha = 7, then the proportion is 10:14:07 and your prakruti will be V2P3K1.
